(...) wszyscy prowadzą co najmniej trzy życia jednocześnie. (...)

“Most of the laugh tracks on television were recorded in the early 1950’s. These days, most of the people you hear laughing are dead.”

When the problem looks too big, when we’re shown too much reality, we tend to shut down. We become resigned. We fail to take any action because disaster seems so inevitable.

The only thing worse than showing up at LAX ugly is showing up ugly but showing signs that you really tried to look good. You gave it your best effort but this is the best you could do. Your hair’s cut and skin’s tanned, your teeth are flossed and the hair in your nose is tweezed, but you still look ugly. You’re wearing a 100 percent cotton casual knit shirt from the Gap. You gargled. You used eyedrops and deodorant, but you still come off the plane missing a few chromosomes.

That wasn’t going to happen to me.

The idea was to make sure nobody thought I was even trying to look good.

So this is why I write. Because most times, your life isn’t funny the first time through. Most times, you can hardly stand it. (…) That’s why I write, because life never works except in retrospect. And writing makes you look back. Because since you can’t control your life, at least you can control your version.

The worst part of writing fiction is the fear of wasting your life behind a keyboard. The idea that, dying, you’ll realize you only ever lived on paper. Your only adventures  were make-believe, and while the world fought and kissed, you sat in some dark room, masturbating and making money.

If you haven't already noticed, all my books are about a lonely person looking for some way to connect with other people.

"If you never have sex, you never gain a sense of power. You never gain a voice or an identity of your own. Sex is the act that separates us from our parents. Children from adults. It's by having sex that adoloscents first rebel.
And if you never have sex, you never grow beyond everything else your parents taught you. If you never break the rule against sex, you won't break any other rule.

The Vietnam War didn’t cause the mess of the 1960s.  Drugs didn’t cause it.  Well, only one drug did. It was the birth control pill. For the first time in history, everybody could have all the sex they wanted. Everybody could have that kind of power."
